The "scandal" is more complex of what many answerers have indicated (many of them absolutely incorrect):
There are match-fixing charges against four top soccer clubs (Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina, and Lazio) and 26 officials: that happened at least in the last two soccer Italian Championship.
In addition, some other Fisrt Division (Serie A) teams and managers are involved in other charges related to inappropriate players transfer.
What triggered the scandal is the former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi, who was tapped with phone calls with officials and referee designators.
All the accused have been charged with sporting fraud and unfair conduct, which could lead to the teams being relegated and the individuals being either suspended or banned from football.
Juventus may be demoted in 3rd division (serie C) and the other three teams may be demoted in 2nd division (Serie B).

It was about games which were frauded by some Italian teams (Inter, Milan and others). They hired referees and bought their matches. As a punishment, they will probably be forced to play in an inferior league.
