I know of that "statistic". But then there are "lies, damn lies and statistics"
I'd like to know who and how they arrived at this 'statistic'.
I guess if we start with the biblical view then some number can be extrapolated if we start with Adam & Eve and follow models of population growth from there - let's bear in mind, though, that many biblical characters lived to ages in excess of 900 years.
Lets scrub the biblical model and turn, instead, to the evolutionary model, though there are so many complicating factors here as to make the numbers suspect or meaningless, such as periods when there were negative growth rates due to environmental and disease factors we don't know of but can guess and postulate the occurence of.

Two big points here. When did the record taking start and at what number was the population and who recorded it and did the 'census'?
But a bigger question is what is a person? Does the author of that magic number start at homo Australopethicus, homo erectus, etc, or the true homo sapien who we might deem as people. Is science absolutely certain when we became homo sapiens: was there a transitional period of a milllion, or several hundreds of thousands of years? Was Neanderthal man, who had a large brain case compared to homo sapiens, included. After all, they were thought to have been annihilated or even bred with homo sapiens.
It seems to me that in the quest for something 'profound' to say, someone or someones has/have conveniently overlooked questions that the scientific community today can't answer.
Being atheist and studying some anthropology and even paleontology to some extent but professing to be no 'expert', whatsoever, I still feel emminently qualified to call into question that 'statistic'.
Now if only I were a devout christian then things would be much simpler for me and I could experience the "wow" factor that many people did on learning of that. In fact I did until I saw the above question about 20 minutes ago.
There's my answer.

False.

The HIndu scriptures inform us that the souls are eternal spiritual entities which are neither born nor die. The souls migrate through various bodies (animal, plant, human etc)

Besides where do you get such erroneous information from? This is not even scientifically possible to predict since mankind has been in existence for millenia and there is no way anyone could know how many people have died throughout history.

But simple math would tell us that the 6 billion earthlings alive today had two parents, which is 12 billion people plus the 6 billion kids for a total of 18 billion people, ad infinitum.

No I never really thought about it, but it does make sense. Especially now since medical technology has advanced so much over the years. With new medicines and new equipment and new treatment of cancers and heart diseases and new tests, we've come along way since the Stone Age.

Can you imagine how life will be like in future years? Awesome to think about.....

Wrong, there are more people dead today than have lived in the past. We don't see them so we feel for them. They are the little people we choose to eliminate when we find the in-convince unbearable. They are you and I still in the womb. lets give them a voice.
