If your inquiry is to ascertain what people outside of Turkey know of it, presumably without looking it up, I know the following:
Turkey is a relatively modern state whose predecessors include the Ottoman Empire and the Byzantine Empire.
Istanbul, which sits astride the passage between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean has been a city of enormous commerical, cultural and strategic importance for over 2,000 years, although it was once called Constantinople.
Turkey has a substantial Kurdish minority in its eastern provinces and the Turkish government opposes the creation of a Kurdish state in northern Iraq for fear that it would incite unrest amongst the Kurds in Turkey who might push for a separatist movement.
Ankara is the capital of Turkey.
There are a substantial number of Turks on the island of Crete and Turkey and Greece have had a long-running dispute over the goverance of the island.
During the time in which Turkey was part of the Ottoman Empire it served as a bastion against Russia's historic push for access to the sea and warm water ports, staunchly defending the Dardanelles.
During the time in which it was part of the Byzantine Empire it was the bastion of Christianity--the forward line of defense against the advance of Islam.
Prior to its Christian conversion it was the center of eastern empire of Rome.
Biblically, Mount Ararat, where Noah's Ark was said to come to rest after the 40 days and 40 nights of rain is in Turkey.
A few other things might come to me if I thought about it for awhile, but I hope the above will suffice to suggest knowledge of Turkey and its past is not completely absent in non-Turks.
Bye the bye, I am an American.

Well they are really big birds native to north america. They are really good deep fried although most like them either smoked or baked at Thanksgiving. The most famous turkey would be the one in the Macy's day parade. He is a really big one!! Dont know anyone who ever lived as a turkey but then I am not into reincarnation. OH WAIT YOU MEAN THE COUNTRY OF TURKEY.. Oh I am so bad, sorry but thanks for the points anyway.

Turkey is NOT a democracy, despite what you will read on the internet.
Besides the Armenian genocide, they have been oppressing the Kurds for 80-100 years, and yet we call them our "democratic muslim ally". it is a joke, we should divide Turkey in half and give all the east to the Kurds to form their own, independant state
