A few years back I accompanied a friend to a spirit reader. Being a serious skeptic I was astonished with the authentic feeling I got from the reader (a lady in her 80s). She told me I was a healer and a dog would soon come to me for healing. I would know because it would roll onto its back, paws up, and I should place my hands on it. A friends dog did do that a little while later, right at my feet. I ignored it because I was about to eat dinner. The next day it died of a heart attack.
Healing ability she said was indicated by a tingling in my hands or skin. I have always experienced that whenever I have prayed or felt strong focused emotion such as when a loved one was sick.

I find this subject fascinating but each time I have tried to research it I always find someone asking for money which to me seems contrary to the concept of healing and makes me suspicious of quacks.

Does anyone know how I can get honest/reliable advice ?

I practice Reiki as a Level 1, but not as a profession, just for people in need. There are three levels of Reiki. Level 1 is hands-on healing touch (what I do). Level 2 is hands-on, but also you can send healing to others, long distance, through meditation. Level 3 is all of the above and it is considered Reiki Master, with which you can teach.

Find a Reiki master in your area. They will charge for a class, ususally $100-200 for a day or weekend workshop. In Reiki, we believe that when you give healing or teaching it is more effective if there is an exchange. The payment when you are healing can be in the form of a barter, but it keeps the healing profession legitimate. I often do Reiki exchanges with people who also know Reiki. You can also give it away to people who are friends or family in need or as part of charity work. But if someone asks you to do it, or you do it as your profession, you should charge a fee or barter because it is your time. In Reiki, healing is caused by Love flowing through you. You are not the source, you just channel it. You can't harm anyone doing Reiki and it is not a religion or belief system. It complements many religions, including Christianity, where God is the source of Love and the more love we give, the more God gives us to disperse. A person will be healed if that is what God and/or the universe (based upon your beliefs) intends. In hospice work it can even speed up death to lessen the suffering of the patient and lessen symptoms until the point of death.

Some people feel a tingling, some people feel heat or cold. You can just let that energy flow when laying your hands on someone. I only suggest training to learn the awareness, anatomy of healing, the major points of healing and to get your own flow in line. A Reiki master can do this for you. Read up on it. Make sure that who you are learning from is a true Reiki master.

Be aware that there are many skeptics out there, just like you were. I find many in the Christian community and I am Christian. I believe that healing power only comes from God and when God was on earth in the form of Jesus Christ he had the perfect healing power. We cannot have this power and it is not ours even if we are given a gift of healing. If you have a healing gift, it is given to you from God. Pray to Him and ask Him to show you what work He intends for you on this earth. What some Christians do not understand is that God can heal anything if it is His will, sometimes our will contradicts His and we must accept that. This doesn't mean we cannot ask through prayer, and I often pray that he do his will on the people I lay my hands on. Prayer is the strongest tool He has given us on earth and Reiki is a form of prayer. Many blessings to you.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Basic Counseling Techniques: A Beginning Therapist's Toolkit by C. Wayne Perry
* Favorite Counseling and Therapy Homework Assignments: Leading Therapists Share Their Most Creative Strategies by Howard G. Rosenthal
* Building Your Ideal Private Practice: A Guide for Therapists and Other Healing Professionals by Lynn Grodzki

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Although reiki and other forms of healing are great avenues for which to practice.... True Spiritual Healing come from inside your own mind.... It comes from your Sub-Consious mind where anything is possible as long as you can control your own mind... All you need to do is break the bearier between you consious and sub-consious mind and then everything will be clear as a bell... Everyone has the talent but you have to take it up in a mental battle to release the inner most concepts of your own mind... If you wish to hear more about it email me anytime....

search the net, on reiki - this is spiritual, ther are books you should be able to get in the library to train and educate youself b4 deciding to get formal reiki training....reiki started by 'usui' -sp? who was a christian monk who wanted to know how jesus healed....and searched and found his answer - for those afraid of religions association they also teach a similar method to nurses and therapists called "therapeutic touch" but it is the same - hands are kept a few inches off the body clothed - i took a class in that and we did the backs of each other, clothed - and really felt the heat/energy....don't be afraid, but just always ask if you can give treatment before you do and keep on reading g/l

If you feel that you have a special gift of healing and you want to use it to heal others, then you only have to begin. We often waste a lot of time trying to find someone who will validate us. That's when we are open to being conned and ripped off. If you want to heal others, then all you have to do is to do it.

Not to discourage you but I do not believe in Spiritual Healling or anything that has to do with spirits.
I believed in my heart that the only person that has the power to heal the sick is God and (was) Jesus Christ.
