I have loads and loads of Audio tapes and CDs. I know it is legal to convert CD's to MP3's but because I can't do that with Audio tapes, is it legal to download free MP3's?

I have found this site which says that we must only download the songs if we have the Audio tapes or CDs of them otherwise it is illegal.

Well technically, yes. You own the right to listen to and have as many copies of those songs as you like. However, most p2p sharing programs (Kazaa, lime wire, bit torrent) Expect you to share the songs if you download them.

You have the right to download them, but allowing others to download them is an infringement on copyright laws and is illegal.

So if you download the songs, make sure no one downloads them from you.

Some programs have an option to stop sharing, and some don't. In most cases you will simply have to watch your outgoing connections and close them down as they arise.

Good luck, and keep safe.

It should be.
You already payed royalties but it's not.The industry can create new media formats every few years and expect us to pay the royalties again and again.
It's an outrage and they shouldn't cry so much about illegal downloads, the fat cats.
