I remember I would love to test video games when I was younger but I did not know how. You hear about it and you know it happens because the games you play must be check for errors by someone. right?
I have good news and bad news. The good news: Game testing or beta testing isn't so hard to become part of now. The first game I beta tested was Everquest Online Adventures for the PS2. It wasn't a great game when I tested it and I'm not sure what its like now. You can search the internet for Beta Testing openings. There are many games that needed users to play test. You can do some of these tests from home or in some cases you can become a full time employee of a game company and play test their games. How did I become a tester for EQ? Well I really can't remember how I stumbled across the ad but I filled out a form and submitted it and I was chosen as part of the testing.
Now some of the bad news. Most beta testers require you to be 18. Yeah... so a few more years. Perhaps you can find a game made by independant developers or game designers needing just someone to play. Or Perhaps they game that needs testing was targetted to your age group and your input would be vital. Another thing to remember is that some beta testing jobs do not pay. I didn't get paid for the EQ testing (which was fine by me) but there are some places that pay you to play.
A lot of these places like you to have good skills in communicating. If you only say "It sucks" and never give a reason why then you are not communicating well enough to help them know why it sucks. You need to be observant and have a keen eye for things out of place. Basically beta testers have to find ways to break the game. Keep an eye out for exploits... like maybe there is one spot in the game where you can always win or a glitch that causes you to become invincible.
Brush up on your written skill and oral skills. Practice with a few of the games you own now. Think about why you like a game. Think about what makes your game fun and what makes it not fun. Beta Testers are very important because they are like the last line of defense for a game's success or any other product that goes out on the market to many people.
Good luck! I will give you a web site where they have some jobs posted and some stories. You can also google phrases like "video game beta tester" or "video game open beta."

You don't need a degree to become a video game tester. LOL where are people getting that information? You do probably need to be 18 though. The real problem finding this kind of work is that there aren't video game developers in every city. Location, and Travel are the main things stopping people from doing this.

I would get in line.... I would say that this has to be one of the most sought after jobs of the new generation.....
However in the same breath i and going to say that you have to look at taking so technical writing classes and public speaking .... Because you aren't going to be just playing games you will have to be able to write and document bugs, crashes, and communicate those findings to the proper channels....
I thought about doing this a while too but I don't think it will be all fun and games... so to say....
You will be asked to test what they want you to test and you probably won't have a choice..... you may be asked to test a portion of the game like the menu system and i doubt that the company would release a full game to you for that type of testing....
It will take alot of footwork to find how the system works but I don't think you would like what you find out about game testing...
Good Luck

Write to all the different game titles and system manufacturers. Ask if they do any at home testing, and if so that you would like to participate.
