A V type bike the pistons are arranged in away so that if your sitting on the bike the pistons are arranged in a such a way that the piston heads are near your knees. a Y-Type has the pistons hidden underneath the gas tank or parallel with the bike this will keep your knees away from the piston heads and allow easier streamlining.

The only difference is the frame. One is shaped like a v where the bar goes across the top of the frame and the other is shaped like a y where the center is open and shaped like a y.
