because that's what society wants. that's why everywhere you look there is a skinny skinny female on all the marketing ads, movies, billboards, etc. So teenagers today feel that in order to be pretty and look good they have to be THAT skinny.

Think of it as a timeline.

Say you're one year old. You barely know who you are, barely recognize yourself in the mirror.

Now say you're 30 years old. You're a stable, emotionally healthy individual, who knows what they want and who they are.

Somewhere in between those two milestones, usually the teenage years, a person develops a desire to be their own person, but doesn't know how to *be* a complete person yet. So, they look for people who seem to be living a life that they'd like to live, and they emulate those people. It's a normal part of growing up.

What ultimately (hopefully) happens is that, after "trying on" different personalities, dress codes and activities, they discover what they do and don't like, and those newly formed opinion help them shape the person that they're ultimately going to become.

To help you understand, consider the songwriter. At first, the songwriter can neither play nor write music. First, they must learn to play, but since they cannot yet write, they play other people's songs. Once they've learned to play other people's songs, they discover how to take what's in their head and play it -- and that means they can become a songwriter.

By the way, this is the main reason that getting married young is a bad idea; if you get married when you're still "trying out" personas, you're ultimately going to either change personas (and so your partner may not like the change), or get stuck in an ill-fitting one (to keep your marriage alive) -- neither is a good option. Better to wait until you're a whole, complete and stable person. You'll still change over time, but you'll change in a direction consistent with the person that you are.

Because teenagers are in what I like to call an 'in-between' period. They are not children anymore and they still haven't reached adulthood, it is at this stage that teenagers try to find their identity. They are usually not sure of themselves and will try anything until they find what they think is the perfect fit, which is usually a clone of someone else. Teenagers don't get it when we tell them TO BE THEMSELVES, simply because they have not found themselves yet, They have to go through a couple good and bad exeriences and trials before they can figure it out.

There are the very few teenagers who are really sure of themselves and know who they are, but the vast majority is still doing this trial and error thing.

Yeah, I don't know why they do that. For example there will be some rich popular girls at their school and they'll be like "Uggh I hater her! She's so spoilt and stuck up!" And then the next day they'll be wearing similar outfits as the popular girls and trying to hang out with them. Too many people don't like to be themselves.

Barbie Girl!

No one can ever be perfect. There is no such thing because, there always will be someone better of worse looking than the next or last person.

'That's life!

You said it correctly when you said, "JUST BE YOURSELF!!!!

Everyone is different and has lots to offer just as he/she is. If we all looked alike, it would be one boring experience.

its just apart of the typical teenage lifestyle. its perfectly normal for teenage girls to want to look like paris hilton or have the same color hair as lindsay lohan. its just apart of growing up in american, the country full of society pressure.

because they see the flaws in themselves that no one else see's, and they see someone else as being perfect, therefore they imitate the person with the hopes of becoming somewhat similar to the person whom they idol so much.
