I was absolutely imressed with them. However losing Guus Hiddink will put a hold on the steps taken for a while. Hiddink was a genious. He was fired from his club coaching career uyears ago by a Turkish team Fenerbahce. Probably the biggest regret this club has. I think Australia started having its own style with Hiddink and for a country that is new to this stage consistency is important. I believe with a new coach they will take an initial step back but hopefulkly will bounce right back up.
I am Italian and I am sorry for the PK call that was unjustified. I also do think that the red card was unjustified. My player dived for a PK, and the Aussie dived for us to get a card. Neither is cheating just what goes on in the game and it has gone on for years. Nevertheless I would have loved to have seen that game play out.
Good luck, but FORZA ITALIA. :)

Anyone who says the Australians weren't impressive have an unfair bias against them. I support Italy but I thought the Aussies played well and they could have held the Italians through to end of 2nd half extra time if not for the penalty. If they can just hold on to Guus Hiddink they definitely have a future.

I think they need to think long term, build academies and the like, and somehow keep hold of someone like Hiddink.
If they end up with someone short-sighted and clueless like Sven they'll lose interest as the team goes down the pan.

i thought they played really good and if they just practice a bit more they will do great and maybe even get into the semi finals or further in 2010. they played great, and they had bad luck getting the bad refs (vs. Croatia, for example. 3 yellow cards... for a croaatian guy of course!)
So i hope they will do well next time, because they desrve it. i wanted them to get further this cup, they wud have also deserved that.
GO AUSTRALIA!!! GO OZ(ZIES)!!!

i think now that they advanced past the preliminaries in this tourney, the sport will grow there. THey have a lot of talent, they just need to develop it, and increase their pool of players through academies, local teams and the like.
