This is a very modern way of teaching students as young as yours. It was something I grasped very early on in school, but everyone's brain does not see and compute the same way. It is basically a way to teach adding so you are able to do it more quickly and without pen and paper. I will try to explain a little below, but I suggest you speak with their teachers to get a better idea. He/she may have a worksheet that will help.
38 + 9
38 + 2 = 40 which leaves 7. 40 + 7 = 47
155 + 90
155 + 45 = 200 which leaves 45. 200 + 45 + 245

You must live in Florida. The elementary schools here are using a new math system which I am not very thrilled about. It is a very intuitive system. It starts a new topic very slowly. It tries to take the most obvious thing about the topic and make students use that to begin learning more about the topic.
Frankly, I taught my son the old way and it works great for him. It helps him get the right answer, and then he can sit back and listen, or try to see how the new method makes sense.

I appreciate what you're saying. I had the same problem with my daughter, and when I tried to help her, showing her my old way, her teacher, in very polite language, told me to butt out. Aside from web sites for help, you might ask the school, or your daughter's teacher, for a copy of the math book their using.

Forget about arithmetic. That's what calculators are for. Teach them algebra.
