I do believe part of the mind is somewhere in the brain, but I believe there is another part not attached to the brain. Some psychics prove this point -- the credible ones who work with the FBI, and John Edward, ect. I do not necessarily believe all the information they get is from "spirits" but I do believe there are tapping into some kind of energy field that has everything else a human mind has -- thoughts, memories, ect.
I have practiced psychic enhancment a few times and i KNOW it is real. I can't get it to work all the time, but when I do it is sooo cool. It is like I can feel a strong energy and I KNOW I am right about something. I mean, I can guess other times and not feel that same energy but sometimes I just know something is right.
For instance, this may sound silly ..but, my cousin and I practice this sometimes. I hadn't seen her in a long time and she came down recently and I tried this. The very first thing I thought (VERY Strongly) was that there was something in her life recently that had a funny feeling about it and I kept feeling the words "larry, barry, and jerry" ( I knew it was something about 2 of these names rhyming) in my mind. Even though it sounded stupid I told her because I knew it was right. She freaked out and said just a few days before, her and a friend were laughing all day off and on (an inside joke) about this guy named "Jerry Berry"...
Some people will call things like this a coincidence, but I know it wasn't. I tapped into something and I could FEEL it strongly. This happens alot when I practice. When I try too hard it won't work, but it's like it has to flow in my mind.
I don't believe a spirit is what is giving me that info, instead I believe I am tapping into her mind somehow. So, therefore, I do not believe her mind is trapped in her brain. :) I do believe the brain, of course, can effect some part of a mind obviously.
I don't know, it's confusing! :) Brain, mind ....

Currently there is the view that the 'mind' is a consquence of the physical workings of the 'brain'. It is a viewpoint addressed by some computer programmers who are attempting to generate a 'deus ex machina' : a computer that is self-aware. However, there are those who also believe that the mind (or ones consciousness for that matter), is not a manifestation of the brain but exists as a 'presence' that is separate from that of matter. This viewpoint was addressed quite seriously by some very well known physicists about 50 years ago (einstein being one of them). Some of the experiments performed by some of these scientists attempted to try to understand what it is that the mind was able to do. For some reading you should have a look at theories developed by men called Heisenberg and Schroedinger.

The brain is located in the skull, but the mind is in every single cell of your body.

The brain is physical, located in time and space. The mind is immaterial, not located in time and space but connected to the brain and able to interact with it...

That is a very deep philosophical question. To begin to understand it, there are many books by the likes of Susan Greenway and Stephen Pinker that will give you some interesting pointers.
Also, have a look at a recent book called "Emotional Intelligence" (can't remember the author's name), which is really good in this field

The mind IS the brain...
But, I think you mean what controls cognition. Well, the mid-brain is involved in sleep and wakefulness, pain perception, breathing, and muscle reflexes.
