My brother in law just moved down there and my husband and I will be going sometime in the next year. Unfortunately he's staying with friends so we'll have to find a hotel. What's the best time of year to go (springbreak is out!)? Everyone keeps telling us it isn't safe to stay outside the resorts, any truth?? Where did you stay and would you recommend it? We are more Mayan Ruins than Club people any suggestions??

The best ruins within a days drive of Cancun are Chichen Itza & Ek Balam. Tulum and Coba are ok but definitely not as good as either Chichen Itza or Ek Balam. (IF you haven't heard of Ek Balam, it is north of Valladolid, off the same highway that connects Cancun to Chichen Itza)

If you are looking to drive a little further then you may want to look at staying a night or two the Merida area. There are lots of options for hotels, even some very luxurious Hacienda's inland (but they can be pricey). That opens up a whole new set of ruins for you - Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil, & Labna are all very close and impressive.

As for safety off the resort, the only time I've spent off the resorts, I've been way off the resorts and far from Cancun. I never once felt that I was in any danger. Now I have heard from people who live in other areas of Quntana Roo or Yucatan state that Cancun is not like other areas of Mexico. That being said, I'm sure that Cancun at least as safe as most large American cities. I sure that if you use your common sense leave your bling at home, and not look like a target you'll be fine.

If you have to stay in Cancun because that's where your Brother is I'm sure you'll find something suitable, if however there is an option to stay outside of Cancun, you may want to consider hotels that are further south down the coast towards Playa del Carmen or even Tulum. Generally speaking the further you get from Cancun the more relaxed things become.

Anytime is a good time to go (minus spring break).

I recommend staying in a hotel in the hotel district. Its safe there and you are less likely to get sick eating there in hotels and restaurants. Any time other than spring break and hurricane season which last from June to October. A hurricane devistated Cancun last year and it is still recovering.

I have been twice and would go back in a minute. I stayed at the Sheraton the first time and at the MAriott the second. Both hotels are great. There are a wealth of activities on the beach in Cancun or you can do tours to Chichenitza, the MAyan ruins, or Excarat, a water adventure attraction.

I would suggest you go visit Chichen Itza (Mayan pyramids), Xcaret or Isla Mujeres. The last time I was there I think I stayed at the Omni. It's a beach front hotel and it was fabulous. I did not encounter any problems with the hotel or people in Cancun except of course for the drunk Americans visiting.
