Last time I tried (2002), I gave up because Speedstep wasn't working under Linux and the CPU was always functionning at full speed, which reduced the battery life by a third or so. Is it still the case?

If the distribution of Linux you are using requires a lot of power, try looking for a distro designed for lighter, lower-power systems. It might not be as visually attractive as some of the other distros, but it will save you a lot of battery life.

One distro to try would be DeLi Linux, at http://www.delilinux.de/.

According to Wikipedia, however, Linux has Speedstep support built into the kernel, so give it another try. I bet support has been added since 2002.

No, it depends on how good the laptop's battery is. If it keeps running out, get a better one.
