They play a pivotal role, but ultimately it is up to how the players perform what they are told.
For instance, up to a couple of years ago Australia were nothing, but Gus Hiddink has turned an average bunch of players into a very good team, and he did the same with South Korea at the last World Cup, where as Spain have always had very good individual players but have always underachieved regardless of who has coached them.

For me, the coach / manager means everything. I think that Sven failed England profoundly, while Pekerman, a great coach, failed Argentina in a mere fraction of time by removing Riquelme and Crespo at the wrong point in their quarter-final clash with Germany. Meanwhile, Scolari got the most out of Portugal and Lippi's substitutions versus Germany were sublime. While it is true that teams need talent, as you have seen, a coach in the end makes all of the difference.

They play a huge role. Like Pekerman decided to pull his team to defense after scoring a goal against Germany. Also Crespo and Riquelme were substituted maybe early hence leaving no offense for the Argentinians in extra time. Messi not being in the game is also questionable. Same goes for Parreira, who decided to have only one forward against a stingy French defense, and did not give its players the freedom they are used to on the pitch.

I think they play a pretty important role for any team especially in such a big event as the world cup. When it comes to team morale, they can provide that much needed inspiration and leadership. Sometimes as we can see that changes to formations and lineups can make a big difference when it comes to each match.Look at for example what Lippi did for his Italian team into extra by changing his fore front lineup to attackers and what came of it.ie: Germany 0 Italy 2 ( 119 min/121 min goals )

Personally, i think they play somewhat of a role, but not a huge role because its the players that are actually in it. they are what make up the team, the coach is just there to guide them. but that might just be me.

coaches play an incredibly huge role in the success of the teams. they choose who plays after all...and they have the choice to switch in players who are better or even worst.

coaches are the ones that set and chose the players to play for their country.and if he makes good or bad substitutions that can help win or lose a game so yes they to have a part in the wins and loses cause he is the one that picked the team.
