Beatniks are fans of music and poetry. They listen to (and/or perform) jazz or rock music... like the music of the Greatful Dead. They are basicly hippies who love art (art in the general sense). They are not in it for money. They just love art, music poetry, whatever it is that they devote their life to. They may not have jobs, but they do have a purpose in life. And that is something to be admired.

It's funny -- I knew one of the founders of the beatniks (Lucien Carr) and didn't know he was a beatnik until after he passed away last year.
As I reflect on him, he was an independent thinker, a real intellect. He was able to work a traditional job, but he also enjoyed conversation.
I see a beatnik as someone like Lucien. In a way, I guess I'm a suburban beatnik :) -- I just coined a phrase!!

I am from the beatnik era, and to ME a beatnik is someone who has a small goattee, and says, "Groovy" a lot, and doesn't do hard labor much. Sort of a poet, musician type. Anyway, that is usually the way they were depicted.

An anachronism. They went away with Eisenhower and cars with fins, much like the Zoot Suiters of the 40s, the Hippies of the 60s and the discomaniacs of the 70s
