I'm assuming you mean to include only currently active players. In which case, I suspect balance would be the most important thing to consider.
I'd first put Shaquille O'Neal at center. He's getting old, but the true dominant center is a dying breed. After Shaq, there really isn't a center at the level of the top centers of the 90s (Olajuwon, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing).
I'd slot Kevin Garnett in at power forward. Why Garnett? Because of his versatility, toughness and intensity. Dirk's a great power forward, but he's a weaker defender and relies on his outside shot a lot. Elton Brand and Tim Duncan are nice players, too, but aren't as durable (going by careers) and don't get others involved quite as well as KG does.
I'd put Lebron James at small forward. He'd fit in well with other stars because of his ability to feed teammates.
I'd put Jason Kidd at point guard. Steve Nash is a nice player, but he doesn't play a lick of defense. Kidd is the best one on one perimeter defender in the game, in my opinion. Late in the season, he even held Nash scoreless through four quarters.
I'd put Ray Allen at shooting guard. I know this will be an unpopular pick. Ray Allen's incredibly underrated, yet I still think Dwayne Wade and Kobe Bryant are better individual players. Still, if you look at this lineup there are slashers and in the paint scorers, but no shooter to stretch the defense. In fact, there aren't many great shooters in the NBA. Ray Allen and Peja Stojakovic are probably the two best three point shooters in the league. Allen set a new record for the most threes made this past season. If Wade was in there, there would be a logjam in the key as everyone would be crowding it trying to get to the basket. If I put Kobe in there, there wouldn't be much ball movement as he's not one to pass it often. Ray Allen would be a great complimentary player in this situation.
6th man. Dwayne Wade - Wade would be huge off the bench. He brings tons of energy and athleticism, plays defense and can play both shooting guard and point guard positions.

Center - Yao Ming
Power Forward - Chris Bosh
Small Forward - Lebron James
Shooting Guard - Dwayne Wade
Point Guard - Chris Paul
6th Man - Dirk Nowitzki
Oldest guy on team is Dirk at 28. This team could win 7 championships in a row before Dirk really started to lose some of his skill and Yao would become more injury prone with advanced age.
