I am a makeup artist and here are some steps and tips to help you:

Foundation helps to even out skin tone and give the look of flawless skin. Apply in the morning and set with powder to keep a smooth complexion all day.

Steps:

1. Begin with clean hands and a clean face.

2. Apply moisturizer appropriate to your skin type. Let it set a few minutes, particularly if your skin is oily.

3. Camouflage under-eye circles and blemishes with concealer.

4. Select a foundation that is appropriate to your skin type and the coverage you wish to achieve. The color should match your skin, disappearing when blended well.

5. Shake the bottle well to mix the formula. Or, simply open a stick or compact version.

6. Place a small amount of foundation on the back of one hand. Dip your makeup sponge or your middle finger into it.

7. Apply to the center of your face: cheeks, forehead, chin.

8. Blend out to your hair and jawline until the foundation vanishes. Pay special attention to blending around the nose, mouth and jawline.

9. Set the foundation with loose powder immediately following application.

Tips:

Foundation can be spot-applied to the areas where you need to even out your skin tone. Remember to set your face with loose powder after application.

Consider your skin type. If you have oily skin, stick with an oil-free formula. If you have drier skin, select a creamier formula that offers moisturizing benefits.

Look for yellow-toned foundation or tinted moisturizer if you're Caucasian or Asian; Hispanics should opt for foundation or tinted moisturizers with yellow-orange undertones. If you are African-American, it's a good idea to use light, medium and dark shades of foundation to allow for different gradations of color on different parts of your face.

Hope that helps.

First of all, forget the sponge. It only absorbs half of your foundation and does not help apply the foundation evenly. Try using a special foundation brush (any beauty store should have it). They do cost a bit much, but do they work great!
As far as powder goes, if you have especially oily areas on your skin, then you may want to apply some powder over those areas.

You start by applying it to the center of your face...forehead, nose and chin and blend outwards. Afterwards, you can use a light dusting of loose powder to set the foundation. A brush is better than a puff, just dip it in the powder, tap to shake of excess, puff it onto your face, then dust to remove extra.

Depends on the foundation. Some have a powder finish and are already matte. If you find that your face gets shiny throughout the day, or you want more coverage, use a powder on top.

that's up to you Do you need the powder? Is your face oily? Or do you look fine the way you are w/o powder? Just make sure your foundation is well blended.

A translucent or mineral powder will set the foundation and help prevent shine.

First go to a make-up counter and have them show you how to apply make up. Next, invest in a make-up book. The book will give you tips on how to apply foundation in many different ways in order to achieve different looks. I love Mac" studio fix. Go to their counter and have them do your make up.

just put foundation on the parts of your face that truly need it, or else it looks caky....like put it under the eyes on the nose and if you have a few belimshes, you can put it there too....after foundation you should use bronzer, this evens out your skin and gives you a nice bronzed look!
