Depends on how old you are, how mature your parents consider you, and how much effort you've put into the dream.

Sometimes kids really work at something and eventually they determine that it's just not working for them. They're honest enough to admit to themselves that they're good, but not great. Or the activity has become so competitive and full of failures that it's no longer enjoyable.

Sit down and talk to your parents about it honestly. Also, talk to your singing and acting instructor or coach, if that's applicable. The instructor ought to be able to provide some useful input as to your longer-term potential.

Maybe you can work out a compromise. You can keep up the lessons but not do the competitions, so that you can enjoy the fun of the activity again without the pressure. Or maybe you can think in terms of using the skills in another direction that's not competitive.

The main thing is to talk honestly with your instructor and parents. Who knows, they may have some important input too. It may turn out you're doing better than you thought, in which case that might inspire you to pick up the dream again.

In any case, sitting down and communicating what's on your mind is the first step.

Hi CityGirl,
All my life I dreamed of singing, I also love to act. Nothing ever came of it, so I accepted another career, which I love very much. It was after I received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour and I was in church just singing along with the rest of the congregation when one day my pastor approached me and asked me to sing with the praise and worship team. I was shocked. It's been six years now that I have been singing worship songs in church every Sunday and Wednesday. It is truly my dream come true. I may not be famous to the world, but God sure knows who I am and it is very fulfilling.
God never forgets the dreams He places in your heart. They will come true, just maybe not the way you imagine. Ask Him to show you which path to take to fulfill the plans He has for your life.
The Bible says in Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future

I myself a father of four and going through this type of situations many time in past.
You should not feel ripped off over this, instead I would recommend that you talk to one of your parent with whom you feel more inclination and explain how do you feel. He or she may listen to you quietly and offer some suggestions.

Ask what they want instead of this and see whether that is more challenging to you then this dream. I have seen many time parents see their incomplete dreams in their kids or may be they have seen some one suffering a lot perusing the same dreams in past.

You just have to explain to them when time permits that this is my life. I honored your dreams but I choose different sky to fly. This can be done very politely and friendly manner.

Remember one thing: Parents always want the best for their kids.

You can do anything if you put your mind to it, dont quit!

Also by the way no parent likes to hear that thier kid stopped following thier dream.

Keep trying if it's still your dream and you enjoy doing it. If you don't enjoy doing it, then give it up.
