Rabbits and Ferrets are both awesome pets- they can be caged when you are not around to supervise, but they need playtime outside the cage every day. If you want something that never leaves a cage, go for a rodent, fish, or tarantula.

Ferrets smell and you have to bathe them every couple days, rats, hamsters, gerbils and all them lovely creatures bite you eventually.Look up Degu's on the internet...ever heard of them? They are actually quite common but many pet stores dont have them and if you ask they won't know what your talking about either.I first found them in Wi. a couple years ago when I went into a pet store looking to buy a hamster or something,I held a hamster, gerbil and a mouse and all but one bit me....another guy came over and said "you dont want any of those, come over here." He handed me the cutest little creature I've ever seen,I was afraid it would bite me and was suprised when he didnt. The guy started telling me all about them, they dont bite unless you do something bad to them or hurt them, they have the IQ of an 8 year old child, they're smarter than any other small animal.I unfortunately had to get rid of my degus a couple years ago, gave them back to the store, but I go to Milwaukee on Sunday to pick up 2 more...that is how much I've missed having them,I will drive 200 miles to get them again...you could sit there and watch them for hours on end they are so interesting. It is now trying to be proven that they are actually not a rodent at all,it was first said they were closely related to chinchillas, though they do eat what they eat and they take dust baths just like them, they are finding that they are more closely related to rabbits.
Look up degus on the internet and you can even post a message on a degu message board to find out if there are any near you,I was looking for 2 male degus (1 lone degu will get depressed and may become aggressive) and I got an answer from the woman i'm buying them from within 2 days.Read as much as you can about them before considering them, there are a lot of things you need to know about them.Look them up,you'll be amazed.

I have to agree. I have had 8 rats and they are the best small animal. They rarely bite, are the perfect size, will eat just about anything, can be litter trained, trained to learn their names and other things. They are incredibly intelligent and social animals and love being around people unlike most other small animals. Never keep rats alone and research their diet very well because they cannot throw up and you have ot be very careful not to feed them something poisonous to them. They lack a gallbladder. They have a bad reputation but I must reiterate they are not wild rats. They are the best pet for many reasons. Get two or more as babies and handle them a lot, and they will your best friend for life. Disadvantages are they are very prone to respiratory problems and tumors. All rats are born with respiratory problems, a disorder called myco, but it flares up when they are stressed or kept in wrong bedding. Never keep them in pine or cedar-they are toxic and make myco much worse. Aspen and carefresh are the best, or if you are poor like me, paper shreds with not too much ink are good as well. Mammory tumors are very common as well. Hope this helps.

Hamster
Gerbil
Mouse
Rat
The ones above are good for small cages
These ones below should have a larger cage or perhaps a hutch outside:

Rabbit
Ferret

It all depends on how much maintence you want to do!

Guinea Pigs are awesome little pets, and very low maintence!

Ferrets are cool and a lot of fun but they are also a lot of work!

And of course

Rabbits are always easy and cute and cuddley
