Putin is trying to restore his country and its former pride. The one thing you have to consider is that one of the only ways he can do it with the current economic state of Russia is to start bringing back some of the old ways of communism. Also, he must challenge other nations and create friction to give his country to get excited about, such as the US-USSR rivalry thaat was able to fuel the growth of both nations.

I think Putin is doing a great job with what he has to work with. My husband is Russian and thinks he's great. We are actually moving there because we see Russia as a place that is on the way up not falling to peices like Canada and the US.
