I've wondered the same thing myself. Sometimes it causes the person's question (or answer) to be completely unintelligible.

Sometimes the spell checker isn't working. I use the spell check on Google's Tool Bar.

I only have two options on the tool bar, since I have Yahoo! Tool Bar.

The spell check has an "autofix" option that I like. It also has the "add to dictionary" feature which is nice to add words like names. Once it's added to the dictionary it remembers, and doesn't try to change it.
