I just moved into an apartment without a/c and I'm thinking of buying a portable air conditioner. I was wondering if anyone whose used it could tell me how they liked it compared to a regular (window or central) a/c. Also, what should I pay attention to when buying one?

I used one in my first home because it was a flip, old and had no AC. I used a window mounted one that did not have to be taken out at the end of the season because it was just too heavy for me to lift. I got the kind that screwed into the window frame for security purposes as it was on the ground floor. Make certain when you are considering units that you take into consideration the square footage of the area you are trying to cool. Mine was rated to handle the area I had it in but because of the home's configuration, it did not adequately cool the last bedroom down a long narrow hallway.

Overall, I was happy with the unit, mine was by Sears because they delivered and installed it. The one feature that wasn't available at the time I purchased mine was the automatic setback feature. This enables you to program the unit to turn on at a designated time, like an hour before you return home from work. It really helps to get the cooling process started without you having to sweat it out!

We've had one for two years'. It is from Bath & Body Works. Paid about $400 for it. It is clean, no drips. It is not quiet like the window a/c's you can buy. It cools nicely. For our needs it is very nice. We move it on the wheels from room to room as needed and two people can carry it down the stairs easily without spilliage.
No complaints. Brand: Penguino

They really do not work nearly as well as a window unit.
