In the song, lyricist Anthony Kiedis laments the early death of Dani California, a poor, young girl from Mississippi who became a bank robber and lived a hard, fast life. A girl by the name of "Dani" also appears in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 2002 single "By the Way." Kiedis has explained that the character of Dani California embodies all the women from his past relationships, "When this funky groove came up it struck me as a perfect place to actually tell a story. It sort of revealed itself to me that it's been the same character, just kind of developing. At first I didn't realize that I was writing about the same girl."'

No I'ts a song by Red hot chili peppers
Lyrics

Gettin' born in the state of Mississippi
Poppa was a copper and mamma was a hippie
In Alabama she was swinging hammer
Price you gotta pay when you break the panarama

She never knew that there was anything more than poor
What in the world does your company take me for

Black bandana sweet Louisiana
Robbin' on a bank in the state of Indiana
She's a runner, rebel and a stunner
Come on every way saying baby what ya gonna

Lookin' down the barrel of a hot metal 45
Just another way to survive

[Chorus:]
California rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California show your teeth
She's my priestess, I'm your priest
Yeaaah, yeaaah

She's a lover, baby and a fighter
Should've seen her coming when it got a little brighter
With a name like Dani California
The day was gonna come when I was gonna morn ya
A little loaded she was stealing another breath
I love my baby to death

[Chorus]

Who knew the other side of you
Who knew that all this time you've been
Too true to say good bye to you
Too true to say say say

Pustribator, gifted animator,
One for the now and living for the later
Never made it up to Minnesota
North Dakota man was a gunnin' for the quota
Down in the badlands she was saving the best for last
It only hurts when I laugh
Gone too fast...

[Chorus 2x]

When they wrote the song, I don't think they were really referring to a person named Dani. But that is not to say that there is not a person in this world named Dani California. California is in fact a last name and looking at the white pages, there is a Daniel California in Houston Texas that is 57 years old.

Dani is actally a character from another song that Anthony used for this song.

no i think they're trying to tell it to some band my best guess is (secret i wont tell you) because whenyo look at the chorus and understand it it says

[Chorus:]
California rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California show your teeth
She's my priestess, I'm your priest
Yeaaah, yeaaah

the "simultaneous release" there i think means that there are some band that releases an album simultaneously and california where hollywood is located has no rest because of these bands what i mean by that is like hollywood become like this "busy place" because of'em and the "show your teeth and rest in peace" section just means that califonia must stop releasing to many records and the other words & phrases there are jus used to confuse or make it look like it's about a girl but the truth is it's all bout a political issues i think ;)

According to the song, yes. The second verse includes the line, "With a name like Dani California/Shoulda known the day was gonna come when I would have to mourn ya."

Anthony Kiedis (lead singer) has said that the character of "Dani" is influenced by all of the women he's dated, so it isn't about one particular person
