I think yummy is one of the most annoying words in the English language. I also hate it when anyone uses the word phenomenal. I had a boss that said the word phenomenal all the time. Everything was just soooo phenomenal. UGGHH!!! Also, the word "like" used all the time drives me up the wall, especially when people write it into their sentences. And the phrase "my bad."

LOL (that's just for V)
Context is everything - as has been pointed out, there are some taste sensations that hit you and provoke old sense memories for which the only appropriate expression is "Yummy". I agree that people who use the word in a new celebrity-driven context, like "yummy mummy" ought to be banned and shot. One of my best friends is called Tommy, and he's in his forties, so I can't get behind the 'anti-shortening' argument, and I'd just like to point out to the teenagers here that NO - you don't get to decide what's "cool" or "uncool" - we invented those expressions in a world where there was hope and where rebellion was about changing the world, not changing your hair colour. You want a word to express your approval of each other, invent your own!

I think I'd cast a vote for the "know-it-all, bored-now" intonation of "Whatever" that's taken hold as a signal from teenagers to anyone over 25 that the young rule the world, and we oldies should just hurry up and die cos we're crowding their planet as the most annoying thing in modern linguistics.

I agree with JK it's ok to say "yummy" when you're trying to encourage your eight month old to eat solids! And words that annoy me? When someone starts a sentence with the phrase " I mean". Stop it now! It's most annoying

It is definitely annoying to say "yummy" infront of a kid.

Otherwise it is OK for adults to say yummy.

Yes, a lot more annoying things:

People (mostly teenagers) using the words: like, whatever, 'I dunno' and using text messaging word spelling in everyday written words, such as 'cn u c' for writing letters, notes to adults; phrases like 'So into it", etc. - grrrrr!

Plus yummy is a great way to describe how one feels about the taste of something they are enjoying...used in any other context, yes it IS annoying! (such as 'yummy mommy' - yech!)

Nope not annoying at all. If it is yummy, then it's yummy. I'd prefer to hear that over swearing any ol' day.
