Because they cost too much and do too little. The shuttle was supposed to be a cheap and frequent ride to orbit. But it turned out to be neither cheap nor frequent. We have stagnated for too many years flying the same old shuttle and not improving space transport technology. It is time to move on and retire the shuttle and spend the money on a new space vehicle.

because the shuttles are old and aging. its like an old car. after a while you just have to get rid of it because things start going wrong. same with the shuttles. it would be much better to just get a new fleet instead of trying to repair the old ones.

The shuttles are getting fairly old. They are extremely expensive to operate. They have safety concerns. The replacement for the shuttle is already in development.

Because much of the same technology have been in use for the last 4 decades...it is now out dated and the space program will get a much needed and long over due over haul. Assuming that the American people are really willing to foot the bill....

Because they will have reached the end of their pre-determined lifecycle. This was arrived at before the first one was built.

because of budgetary constraints.. they just can't find enough money to feed this thing anymore.
