I've gone to waxing. It hurts at first, but you get used to it, and it stays smoother longer.
But if you are going to shave, here are some tips to help keep you smooth.
*Soak the area in warm water or put a warm cloth on the area for at least five minutes prior to open up the pores.
*Exfoliate the area with a loofah
*Use and anti-bacterial soap (womens intimate soaps usiaually work best) as a base instead of regular soap or shaving cream because it'll help fight bacteria from entering your pores, which causes those red irritation bumps.
*Always use a sharp clean razor. If it's dull or the moisture strips are comming off, it's time to toss that razor.
*Re-wash with anti-bacterial soap to make sure that bacteria didn't get a chance to get in, then rinse well.
*Pat dry, do not rub
*Apply moisturizer
That will work for legs as well as bikini areas, underarms, and intimate areas, and will keep you irritation free and your skin smooth.

I shave every day. I also sahve properly so that I'm sure not to irritate the skin or cause ingrown hairs. Try this:
Basic Steps Of Shaving:
If you have long pubic hairs, trim with clippers or scissors.
Take a long warm bath before shaving.
Before applying shaving cream, rinse with cool water.
Apply shaving cream for a few minutes before shaving to soften hairs.
Be sure to use a sharp blade. Try using two blades if you are shaving a large area.
When shaving, stroke an area no more then twice in order to reduce skin irritation.
Be sure to clean the area afterwards with soap and water to reduce the risk of infection. It would be helpful to clean the area a second time using cotton balls and rubbing alcohol.
Some people find it helpful to apply baby powder or talcum powder on a daily basis to keep the area dry and irritation free.
Practice clean hygiene after shaving by washing the area once a day to reduce sweat and oil build up.
Go as long as possible between shavings to reduce skin irritations.

your getting irritated for one of a few reasons most common ones are, your not soaking long enough to soften the hair(take a very hot bath and oak for about 15 mins), two your not using enough shaving gel or lotion(i find the gels help the razor glide), three your not using a fresh razor(new razor EVERY time you shave) when you first start shaving regularly your skin will be irritated although taking the above precautions will help tremendously.
Another helpful tip is to use a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol after you shave when it start to burn apply a cotton ball dipped in peroxide its my own aftershave plus it helps fight off any little ingrown hairs.
I usually shave every third or fourth day depending on the speed of your hair growth i would recommend the same. Before i started using an aftershave (the alcohol and peroxide) i could only shave about once every two weeks.

Theres a great cream you can put on to cut down on the irritation. I can't remember the name of it, but I see commercials on TV for it, my gf says it works fantastically, and I see no bumps lately.

Waxing is definitely the way to go, and you only have to do it once or twice a month.
