Play a "get to know each other" game. You can have the kids write down some statements about themselves (perhaps 1 or 2 true, 1 false) and have their classmates guess.

It will be fun for the kids, get their writing juices flowing, and they (and YOU) will learn about them at the same time.

macaroni art!

This one's kinda messy

use construction paper and cut out stars and happy shapes and then at the top poke a hole. Then use yarn about 2 - 3 feet and tie it to the end. Have the kids glue the macaroni to the shapes and then use a washable paint and have them paint it. After it dries hang the art from the ceiling in the classroom! (if the school allows it of course)

I always have a welcome back coloring sheet on their desks the first day of school. I find that students come in at different times and they've got all there supplies to put away, so it's nice to have something simple to do on their desks. Oh, we have a back to school night two days before school starts and I make name tags for the students and let them pick their desks. That way, they know where they are going on the first day of school.
