Depends on who you talk to. Anne Rice would say Akasha, Buffy/Angel has some sort of weird lore about alternate universes and an uber-vamp. Lilith is another common "source" of vampirism. Others say it's Dracula or Vlad the Impaler. And if you ever read the Chrisopher Pike series "The Last Vampire" the answer would be a Hindu god.

Truthfully, no one can really ever know where the legend of vampires began and who was the originator of it all. But I'm sure we'd all love to find out.
