What if the power is off and no battery-powered equipment is available, but you're asked to write a report due in 30 minutes, and there is no spellcheck? What if you give a demanding boss an error-ridden report? Will he or she be impressed? I have a first cousin to whom this really happened, but it was during a job interview. The report was a pre-employment test to see what he could do. He got the job because he knew how to spell and write coherent sentences, and he is a great success in the field of journalism. You would know him if I told you his name.

I used to own a collection agency, and I was forced to ask my applicants to write two paragraphs about why they want to work in this industry.

The only reason I did it was to make sure they could write and spell. And this was in a college town in Missouri.

I think employers care *a lot* if you can spell, if you can dress well and if you lack metal bits in your face if it's a job that pays well and a job that most people want.

If it's a job laying asphalt in the street it does not much matter in today's world.

But if you'd like to make a decent living, raise a family and have a nice home and a car, get a good education and look nice. Don't smoke, don't pierce your face and don't have tattoos visible on your body.

Employers often see key skills as important so an interviewee who hands in a report riddled with grammar and spelling mistakes will be compared unfavourably to one who doesn't. The ability to communicate with clients, customers, collegues and other agencies is important and an employer will want to present a professional image.

Of course the boss cares if you can spell that is why he is the boss and you are not. 1 or 2 error is ok but 10 is not acceptable.
