Ok, my answer will be biased, as I am a conservative so I won't pretend to be unbiased. Here's how I see it:
Blue= democrats, liberals, socialists, communists, eco-wackos, left leaning people
They basically want the government to have more control, more rules, bigger government, more welfare, more research for AIDS and other preventable diseases so people can continue to do the same stupid things that got them sick, more taxes for the bigger government. They tend to be pacifists and they tend to worship science a bit too much in my opinion to the point where they will believe almost anything some scientist spouts out. The good thing about some of these people is that they tend to be more compassionate for those who are struggling, like the middle class.
Red=republicans, conservative people, fundamentalist christians, evanghelicals, old fashioned, People that tend to take the Bible literally as in : Abortion is not a choice but murder, Marriage is not to be redefined by man, it has already been defined by God. Etc. We believe that the US was founded on Christian principles, and those principles should not be changed.
Each side has good and bad things, but the two sides have huge irreconcilable differences. There's no way for example that a liberal can convince me that abortion should be left as a woman's choice when to me it is clear that abortion is nothing short of murdering a human baby. We don't give other murderers a choice, so why should we give a choice to women who murder their babies?
Unfortunatelly, Bush is not a true conservative in some ways, like when it comes to the budget.
Fortunatelly, Bush is a whole lot better than someone like John Kerry who is basically a socialist in his views.

America is only divided by the media. Not all Americans agree with every view of their political party. The nation is different culturally by region as people in the North East have some customs that differ than people from the Gulf Coast, etc. I think the Red State/Blue State dichotomy is too generic. I think more Americans are moderate about issues and this tends to be overlooked because it doesn't sell a news story. I am originally from Pittsburgh which tends to be conservative on social issues but more liberal on economic issues.

The Blue states (or, "rational" states, as they are sometimes referred) are those which believe that the world is a changing place; technology and science can no longer be persuaded by the wanton laws of the old Constitution, and new interpretations must be heard to open-minded liberals to change the world for the better.
The red states are neo-conservative republicans who believe that the right to bear arms is the best thing to ever happen to this country.
Look at the big picture and decide for yourself: where do you live?
Generally, above the Mason-Dixon line are Blue states (i.e. most of the original 13 colonies). Below are the red states, like Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and other beer-guzzling, gun-wielding good ol' boys. Basically, if you believe in enslaving the black man, then go to a Red state.
Of course, these are all generalizations, and you should never judge a person by the state they are from, but by what they believe. It just happens most evil-doers live in Red states. purely coincidence, i'm sure.

yes america is divided but not the way most people think. You have thirty percent on the extreme sides of every issue and then there are the 40 percent in the middle who aren't sure, but might be persuaded.

Blue = Democrats
Red = Rebulicans
The democrats, for instance, are pro choice (pro-abortion)
The Rebublicans are pro-life (do not support abortion)
The democrats would take "God" out of everything, The republicans would leave it there.
Those are the best examples, not all democrats are pro-choice and not all republicans are pro-life, but the majority of the party swing either way.
