I just recently started a band, I need a good bass amp that will over power the drums. How many watts should get the job done and what brands do you reccomend

Get something with plenty of power - I usually shoot for at least 250 watts or so. Always better to have plenty of room to play with. If you have to crank your amp to overpower the rest of the band, you're going to stress your speaker and get some distortion in your sound. Better to have that power so that you can keep your volume lower and subsequently, your calrity of tone.

Same for the speaker - match it well to the amp head. I play with a 4X10 cabinet. I tried a 15" speaker and it was distorting too much. Plus, if one of your 10" speakers blow, you can possibly do some quick re-wiring and finish the night with your other speakers.

Having said all that, I find Hartke amps sound great and are relatively inexpensive. Peavey isn't bad either. Yamaha sounds pretty awful to me. I've heard good things about Ashdown but haven't tried any yet.

Currently, I'm using an old Peavey head with a 4X10 Carvin cabinet. Cheap, but decent tone and reliable.

Well this will also depend on your bass. But I would recommend something like Peavey. It's a decent amp that should last for a while. Remember, you get what you paid for. If you can, get you a Hardke Kickback......it'll run around $400 to $500.....it'll be powerful enough to be louder than the drums, is easy to move around....and is strong enough to take abuse. Carvin also sells a good "kickback" style.......and it'll last for years. I would recommend you save your money and buy something decent.....instead of compromising your music........Best of luck to you...........

I'd go for the Carvin combo. You get more features for the money, and it's good for club gigs. You can always add an extra cabinet later if you need more coverage. Remember, you'll gig more if you have something you can carry, so don't go for the SVT 8x10 just yet!
