It depends on the context. If you're talking about developmental milestones, there is a huge difference between 16 months and 18 months.

This question has nothing to do with development. I understand what you are saying perfectly. Parents are always saying things like " I have a 18 month old at home" instead of saying the child is 1. Parents just say that to sound more sophisticated in my opinion. Whenever asked my daughters ages, I say one is 2 and the youngest is 5 months, because that is what they are. I'm not about to sit there and calculate months and days after my child has already turned 1; it is pointless. If your baby was born two years ago, THEN THE BABY IS 2!! But its not my say

It's done because saying a baby is one when they are 16 or 18 months wouldn't be accurate. Babies develop by the month, and a 16 month old can do things a 1 year old cant and can't do things a 2 year old can. Once they hit about age 3 development isn't so rapid and it would be accurate to say 3 or 4 versus 38 months.

It's logically right to say for the baby up to 1 year old how many months is old, but after it turns to be 1 year old, I think it's too stupid to say the age in month when there is a possibility to say it in years then! What about if we start to count our ages in months, would that be weird and stupid?

You are the stupid one. You obviously don't have any kids. There is a big difference in their attitude and how they act depending on if they are 12 months, 18 months, or 22 months. You just need to stop being so lazy to do the math if someone says their child's age in months, rather than years.

We say this to eliminate confusion. If a baby is let's say 19 months, and you say that they are 1,people will then say things like, wow he/she is really big to be just one. It's just easier to say the months.Sometimes new mothers compare their babies to others.Like when they see a baby and ask how old it is and the mother says,oh,he/she is one when they are really closer to 2.The first time mother might start to be concerned that her baby isn't as advanced as the other because the other baby may already be drinking well from a sippy cup, when hers isn't.I hate it when a person tells me that their child(toddler) is like 2 when they are actually closer to three than two,and looks to be around three.First time mothers are consumed with time lines, and the mental development of their children, anything that seems different in other children is a cause for concern to them.I guess it's just a mom thing. Please don't be annoyed by us that do that.We don't mean any harm.We are just counting the milestones.Lighten' up a little okay???Teacher/mother said it best. That's it in a nutshell.

Babies develop and change so rapidly that it makes more sense to state their age by month. A 9 month old is at a completely different place from a 3 month old. A kid who is 18 months is far, far ahead of where he or she was at 12 months. Once they get to be about 3 it evens out and you might as well start going by years again.

i doubt it because the children are a year plus more months, some people wont say a year and 4 months because theyre just lazy to keep up so they say all months in total. another thing is they might say o that the baby is 16 15 days months wats up with that??but they cant say like 16 1/2 months??

Be careful about making assumptions about what people care about and why until you are aware of all the facts. There are numerous reasons to care about a child's exact age, especially prior to age 5. Early development is crucial to a child's success later in life. How old a child is in months affects how you plan every aspect of their day: their education (toys, daycare, activities, etc), what to feed them, how often and when they sleep, medical advice and medicines, safety issues, even what clothes to buy them. Many people care about providing the best possible care and evironment for the child: the parents, family, friends, teachers, doctors, etc. Whether or not you have children of your own, keep this in mind when you interact with children.

During the first 2-3 years of life, children change and learn so much. Each developmental stage is so different people talk in shorter amounts of time to clarify where the child is agewise. About 2 or 3 years old is when the majority of people stick with ___-years old.
