It's about a young man who wants to be more than he is, in a class-bound society. He wants to marry Estella, a beautiful young woman out of his class. In the end, he inherits wealth, but from an escaped prisoner he once helped while a child, which is ironic.

Pip-the main character-is a third class young boy who lives with his bitter sister and her husband after his parents die.

He meets a escapee from the jail in the graveyard. The man threatens him and orders him to bring him food and tools to break his irons free. Later in the story, Pip is invited to an older woman's house to "play". His sister bitterly takes him there in hopes of the old woman paying Pip. Pip meets Estella, the little girl who lives with Miss Havisham. Estella is gorgeous, but snotty towards Pip.

That's pretty much the jist of the beginning. Try and keep reading it, it is an excellent book once you get far enough into it.

The gist of the novel is how Pip yearns for a better life than what he has, and how he does so. Mrs. Havisham and Estella play important parts as they practically interfere.
