One of the great Greek lyrists and few known female poets of the ancient world, Sappho was born some time between 630 and 612 BC. She was an aristocrat who married a prosperous merchant, and she had a daughter named Cleis. To be sapphicly inclined is to be a lesbian. The term "Sapphic" is basically in reference to the Ancient greek poet Sappho who was ironically, born in the island of Lesbos. She apparently had a school for women poets and wrote quite a few poems about one of her students.

Sapphic is another way of saying lesbian. It generally refers more to directly sexual practices, however. The word refers to a minor Greek goddess, Sappho, who was said to be a patron saint/spirit of the women of Lesbos, that mythological isle of women....

Edit: Whoops! Forgot there was a real-life poetess backing up the legend, sorry, my bad...this is what I get for being off the cuff. Sorry.
