The United States would retaliate heavily.

North Korea doesn't have any oil! this should put your mind a little bit at ease :) ... I think that the UN will interveen before the worst happens, but this situation has been mounting for years. I don't think that the Americans will support another full-on war like Vietnam, supporting their cause with Anti-Communist ideals.
It's my opinion that the Americans will seek support from the World governments, after their efforts in the Middle East they won't want to show themselves as being "gun-ho" and looking for a fight, but this time diplomatic and leave most of the work to UN peace keepers. The US and George Bush has achieved what he wanted in Irak and that will be the war of his office in the White House and will not want to end his last few years with another war but show the people of the US that he only has the best interests of the people at heart and will work on resolving the problems they have closer to home.
Korea is treatening but I don't suppose that they will attempt to start a 3rd WW... even if they do have a crazy dictator or not, these dictators come and go quite quickly these days. But, I don't think it's going to be all resolved for a good few years yet. Unfortunately war is good for business.
I say, don't put too much attention to the threats, it'll all be okay in the end.
And I totally disagree with any thoughts that people have that if there is a nuclear missile strike on the US that the US will retaliate. The people of America will be scared, but this emotional reaction will quickly pass realising the awful outcomes. Countries of the world threaten the US first because they're always the first to be thought of, the US hypes themselves up and this makes them the first target.

If North Korea attacks the U.S., it would most likely be a nuclear missile strike. The trouble is, their balistic missile technology could probably only reach Alaska or Hawaii, or on U.S. Forces in South Korea and Japan. It would have very little affect on America's industrial strength.

Any such attack would be answered with an annihilating nuclear strike on North Korea, followed by a military draft and invasion of North Korea. It would really suck. For everybody.

Realistically, though, it will never happen. The dictator of North Korea may be crazy, but he's smart. And he doesn't have a death wish. He just wants to intimidate us enough for us to back off on demands to stop nuclear weapons testing and production. If he did order an attack on the U.S., even China would turn against him, because China's economy depends on the United States and Wal-Mart.

Our biggest reason for caring about North Korea's weapons programs, by the way, is that country's proven track record for selling internationally restricted weapons to other "rogue nations." Nations, such as syria, who have a propensity for invasion of other countries and support of terrorism. Our government couldn't care less about what happens to the people of North Korea.

North Korea does not want to attack the States, they want AID, and since they don't have any gas or other resources worth raping, the only way to get the world's attention is to talk big, and make a big game out of being the little man getting the big mens attention. It seems to be working very well as a strategy so far, although it also seems like there is not enough compassion in this world to help those poor and hungry people.

north korea's government controlled tv stations can pick up signals from nearby south korea. i bet those commies watch world news and cnn. they know that the US army can annihilate them with one fell swoop that it is silly to assume that the north koreans are that stupid. the purpose of the missile tests is a pre emptive move to discourage america from attacking north korea. so, the only way this scenario is possible is when the US attempts to attack north korea first. i dont think that the US is keen on doing that right now because that would be political suicide for the republicans. the best that can come out of this is that it gave the US a reason to enhance its missile defense system, a very dangerous thing if another Bush gets elected after 2008. america will be untouchable.

Well, they'll piss off many Americans, especially the Military people and the government (more work for them!). But the arm & military supply industry will be happy (more business!)
A lot of American people will be like "Let's F***'em Up!!!"
And A lot of American people will say very negative things about that country.

But let's think 2x: Will NK Attack the US? Probably not.
1. Ok we got one crazy Commies but not all Commies are crazy anymore, or at least act stupid.
2. If you disagree with No. 1, Think how smart Japan was, they attacked the Pearl Harbor.
3. NK DON"T have the ability (military, financial, alley, resource) to attack the US. Therefore they Wouldn't!
4. What if the US pre-emptive Strike NK? (think Iraq)
5. NK just wants some attention, talk, hang out time with the Western, some food aid, get rid of their toys, screw the Asian stock market around for a bit... They don't want to do no Harm folks!

In case you're wondering, I'm a American Citizen and I vote and I am educated liberal with a job in a big city. Not here to offend anyone. I speak truths with logic (i try). Thank you.

As other's have said, this is actually an unlikely scenario. An attack involving the US would involve two possibilities:
1- A conventional attack over the border to capture Seoul
2- A WMD attack against the US proper, either via ballistic missile or by co-opted terrorists.
I have to disagree with some other answers. Either attack would trigger retaliation on the part of the US; with a vast majority of Americans supporting such action. Especially, scenario #2.
Kim Jong Il is a loon, but he's certainly not irrational. He IS having some difficulties controlling entities in the Gov't/Military, so it is at least possible that a radical element may sponsor such an attack (most likely #2) to either discredit Kim or enable him to deal with his opposition (assuming the "opposition" are in fact in favor of closer ties with the West.)

There are missle defense systems in Alaska and California to intercept any incoming missles. However, they have not been tested extensively and so we are not sure they will work. Hopefully, they are operational and functional. An unprovoked attack from North Korea whether intercepted or not will provoke war. This will be bad for the US since a great deal of troops are overextended in Iraq and Afganistan. I hope this will not happen...because millions of lives could be in jeopardy.

We will retaliate from Okinawa, South Korea and our Pacific Fleet, the we will lead a land invasion and take the north. It will be a bloody fight that we will win very quickly. China will throw a fit but if they get cute we will blow up their new Dam.

There will not be a stick left upon a stone in North Korea if they do.
