im an engineering student(4th year) but i still dont understand this.

i went to my backyard and found a whole egg. i live in a boxy addition.so no weird shaped back yard.

LOCATION: about 10 ft from the the back fence and halfway between my two side neighbors(approx 30 feet from each). on dry dirt(no grass established).

FENCE: 6ft tall, no holes or large gaps. gate is shut and locked.

EGG: real egg. no visible fractures. not hardboiled(i cracked it open and dumped it out). golfball size.

If you really want to know, it sounds like you need to do an experiment. Try throwing an egg from 30 feet away onto that patch of dirt. Repeat 2 or 3 times. How many of the eggs actually break?

As a follow-up: could you throw an egg so that it lands on grass, and then rolls to the dirt patch?

Good luck.

Once in a while a bird flying overhead underestimates the time and distance back to the nest, so an egg is lost in flight. Dry grass is springy. It's very possible that an egg could drop without breaking.

I presume the question is how did it get there. Of course, the most likely is that someone in your household left it there. If a neighbor wanted to puzzle you, the easiest way would be to lower it gently with a fishing pole. Next would be to roll it down a ramp. Another possibility is that a hawk stole it, landed in your yard to feast on it, and then abandoned it.

Eggs are pretty tough, if it lands just right, it can fall from 3 stories and remain whole. If you put it between your hands just right and squeeze, it can also be very hard to crack (it has to be JUST right)

Or else, someone covered it in loose crumbly ice, and the ice all melted b4 u got there!

What kind of egg? Maybe a bird landed there and droped one out before taking off again. Or maybe a lizard laid one there and ran away.

Maybe your six year old cousins had picked it up & moved it from another location.
