A big portion of the battle with getting a tat for people is nerves. It sounds like your head is in the right place, but there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself and help things go a little more smoothly.
1) Bring a candybar and/or soda. I don't know how large you plan on getting your tat, but if it's going to take a fairly good amount of time, bringing something high in sugar is going to help. The reason being, your body is going to go into flight or fight mode as the pain sets in. It's going to produce more adrenaline and this might make you a little bit light headed. Drinking the soda or eating the candy bar will feed your body some sugar and help to combat the feeling of wooziness.
2) Relax, relax, relax. Try not to tense up your muscles, it really is a huge help if you can just stay calm and loose during.
3) This may sound silly, but, remember to breathe. Don't hold your breath! Some people have the tendency to hold their breath while the needle is moving and exhale when the artist goes to get more ink or wipe away the access ink on the tat itself.
4) If you're really worried about it, bring something to distract you. I have a friend who has a relatively low pain threshhold and she swears by bringing a book to read. When i had my first one done, i brought in a burned cd of some of my favorite music. My artist was more than happy to put it on, and by being able to sing along to some metal, it distracted me nicely.
5) Make sure you wear comfortable clothing. Again, i'm not sure how big this is going to be, but in any event, wear something you can lounge in, pajama pants work well, and your artist is going to have to tug them down a bit to get to the part of your body you're getting it on, so best to wear something with an elastic band up top so he can slip that side down easily.
As far as ointment goes, your artist will give you probably enough to last you for 2 days. After that, check out the baby care aisle of Target, Walmart, or any drug store. Get a tube of B &G ointment. Also get a tube of non-scented lotion for the second two weeks of the care for your tat. It is very important that you DO NOT let your tattoo dry out. After you're finished, your artist will hand you a sheet with care instructions, telling you how often to apply it, what to do about showering, etc. Oh, and there will be no swimming in pools or the ocean for awhile, so i hope you took that into consideration...otherwise your tat will fade considerably.
Best of luck!

youre going to get gangreen and die from the needle.......
relax chick, you will be fine. i have 10-plus tattoos and I still get
a little tense, when I hear the needle being started up. its part
of the fun, when its over, you'll feel kinda tired, maybe even light headed.....i love that, its like an adreneline rush.
the more on a bone, the more the tattoo will hurt, so keep in mind that if youre slender and your hip bone juts out a little it hurts a little more. the feeling can be best described as like a million little
pricks, or a millions little scraping along your skin. the one youre
getting proboly wont take longer than 20 minutes to 45 minutes
its an easy starter tattoo. lol i started with a pair of dice on my wrist and it has been a down hill battle ever since lol.
I got a back piece 2 years ago and it was a huge sun-thing and
that was on my upper back right on my spine, that one hurt alot
but i year later i got another on the back of my neck, im sure you'll
love it.
everyone swears by different things, but i use old fashioned
diaperrash cream, dont use too much, but leave a nice coating
on it, mayeb re-apply every 4 hours or so, dont glob it on; the tattoo needs to breathe, youll have a bandage on it for like
10-15 hours, then you can take it off. your tat will proboly
1 week-week and a half to "heal" and need the diaper rash ointment.
good luck and you go grrrl!

Perhaps take a couple of tylenol before you go could help dull any paint. But it won't help a lot. Tattoos do hurt. But after a while, you will become adjusted to the pain.
Your body's response to the pain will release endorphins, which will assist in helping you being able to withstand the pain.
I have two tattoos, but they are both nearly 10 years old. So, I don't remember which type of ointment I used. Just ask the tattooist and he/she'll be able to tell you what they recommend.

They will give you some ointment when you are done. Use ALL of their recommendations for the best results on your tat. If you thought you needed to you could maybe take a couple Tylenol before you went. But I personally like the little bit of pain it gives. Good Luck and Congrats on your first ink!!!!! It will be a memorable experience.

I have two tats. Both times I took Tylenol an hour before. Eat some crackers, nothing heavy in case to get nauseated. Take a bottle of cold water to drink or to put up against your neck. Relax, breathe, and make sure it's something that you won't regret later. Good luck! Oh yeah, simple neosporin works great.

I’m a tattoo artist......and there is a lot you can do to prepare yourself..........put on your most comfortable stuff. Like shoes…..pants…etc. If you feel bad, it hurts. Eat something……..not to much, but don’t go with empty stomach. And no alcohol……aspirin…..all these things thins the blood. At least……..relax……….we´re artists…..no children-eating monsters ;-)) (But we love to see them feeling the pain….)
After you´re inked, surely you ca take a shower…..but no bath or swimming. The tat should not stay wet too long…….don´t use shower-gel with alcohol inside for the first few days……after the shower do not rub your tat but easily dab………no sun for about 4 weeks……in future use sun-blocker on it and it´ll keep color.
And……just listen to your artist´s recommendations……..

The pain isn't all that bad. I have 5 tattoos and I found that it helps to have someone with you, whether they are holding your hand or just sitting with you. As far as ointments, Tattoo Goo is the best. They have soaps, lotions and color guards that help the tattoo keep its color.
But beware, tattoos are addictive

If you go to any tattoo websites, they'll tell you that you should get one on a full stomach, and don't drink alcohol it only thins the blood. But you'll be fine, oh and afterward use bacitracin ointment or lubriderm lotion, use only white cream.

Tattoo Goo is great - but if you aren't going to use that - use fragrance free lotion. Keep it out of the sun - don't go swimming in the ocean or pool. The better you take care of your new tattoo, the better it will look. I have plenty of tattoos myself and used to work in a shop...
