Because it's fun. They play with different toys for different reasons. For example, they love to chase things because they're hunters in the wild.

Their nature is to hunt. They play with their prey for a while. I think it is to understand how it gets around. They are killers by nature. I have cats and they will play with anything that moves. Or does not move:)

you really wanna know why? Actually they are not "play" as we see it. they are trying to kill it. They see it as a something smaller, and the animal urge kicks in, kill it. Eat it. when they bat at it, they are trying to gore it.... however its very entertaning to use a laser pointer on the wall, in a dark room. you here the cat hit the wall in the dark. haha
