Do you think Barkley and Malone wouldn't have won a championship if put on the Lakers teams of the 80s or the Bulls teams of the 90s? Are you saying that Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino? Doesn't it all depend on the players you are fortunate or unfortunate enough to play with?

We measure great players that way, because most fans are casual fans who don't understand the game enough to realize that championships are won by teams, not individuals. If Kobe never had Shaq, he wouldn't have any rings. Hell, if Jordan didn't have Pippen, he might not have won rings. It's certainly a great feat to be able to lead your team to a championship and I think it should be something that goes on a player's resume as a great player, but certainly Allen Iverson can't be faulted for not winning a title. He has never had a championship calibar team behind him. The same is true for many other great players.

Anyway, you're 100% correct and it's a shame, but there will always be fans out there who can't see the forest for the trees.

The Detroit Pistons winning the title was a prime example of how championships are won by teams, not stars. They didn't have one superstar on that squad, yet embarrassed the Lakers that year...a team that had four hall of famers in Shaq, Kobe, Payton and Karl Malone.

Who thinks players are great only if the win championships? It goes into the equation, no doubt about that but look at Barry Sanders...one of the greatest running backs of all time and he didn't win a Superbowl. And find me someone who thinks Trent Dilfer is better than Dan Marino!

Of course, youmade a clear point, altough you need to agree that Jordan on the Jazz team of 97/98 would have won twice. Anyway when it becomes a close call, meaning that personal statistics are close then the rings is a dif maker, it takes more than talent to win and some talented players lack the killer instincts or the mental to win it all. Once again you are not great only if you have a ring but you are always greater with a ring.

You're absolutely right. Especially in football. QB's got it the worst. In my opinion, some one like John Elway was great BEFORE he won two Super Bowls. But had he not won one, all we would here about is how he was really good, but not great. You're comparison of Dilfer to Marino is the perfect way to illustrate that point.

becasue championhips are the most watched pressure packed of games. if a player is the best they should prove it on the highest stage. marino did not play well in the playoffs. malone let jordan steal the ball from him in a crucial play. barkley talked more then performed against chicago.

Most of the time that is what they are measured by, not to say people who do not win championship aren't great, but sometimes being great is postioning yourself to win a title. Making the lasting memorys of winning the championships or doing the hard work that gets you thier is being great.
