It's not normal because you are supossed togrow out of it. However it isn't anything to be ashamed of. I am 18 and I still do it. It is kinda like a security blanket type deal. Like when people bite their nails when they are nervous. It just makes you feel safer when you are doing it.

Truthfully no. There is probably an underlying problem. I bite my nails. I have since I was little. I know it comes from problems in my childhood things that scared me and still haunt me today. If I get upset I bite all my nails off. Kids suck their thumbs as a sense of security (comes from babies feeling secure against their mothers when being fed). Talk to someone and find out what is making you feel insecure. Once you come to terms with that you should be able to break the habit.

I don't know how normal it is. But I at least know one person that does it. It comforts them. It is unusual to see though. But you have to not judge them. He does not do it in public he does it around the house and when he get tired and when he sleeps. It is like an habit a person has that is not exactly perfect. You accept them with it. If they want to stop encourage them. The only thing I can suggest is to google the matter. But you should not feel judged by the behavior , certainly there are worst things in the world.

My first thought is some type of frustration that you may be experiencing... if that's the case try to figure out the underlying issue. Its also possible that you may have TMJ, or something like that, it a jawbone disorder that get relief from the pressure of a thumb in mouth... Think about it...

you put hotsauce or hot powder or something on your thumb(s) and when you have the urge to suck your thumb, and if you do, it will be very spicy and hot and you won't want to do it anymore. If that does not work, (doubt it won't work) do it a few more times at night. It isn't really very normal to suck your thumb at 34, but I am sure this will work, trust me! Your Welcome!
Please make this the best answer! jk lol

Absolutely normal though most people don't know that adults do, indeed, suck their thumb. Most of them do it privately but it's been estimated that around 2-3% of U.S. adults suck their thumb habitually with the percentages rising as the figure approaches 18 years of age.
As far as it being embarrassing, that's your choice.

Honey I'm, 37 and when my wife and daughter went to London- to see family- then my constant companian was a 14-inch tall bear. Called bear, lol, I even gave it a name. And when I had a coffee then it had an imaginary coffee. I had little chats with it- like in my mind- and I imagined that we did everythng together.
So it's fine. It makes us feel emotionally secure.

Relax, it's a huge fad at the moment. Totti (Italy) did it in front on 100s of millions of football fans when he scored a (dubious) goal against Australia last week in the World Cup.

i bet you have a really bad over bite... i don't know how for you to stop, you could try coating your thumbs in crisco (the really nasty kind that comes in a can or tub or whatever) every night before you go to bed. if you get one taste of that stuff you'll never want to put your thumb in your mouth again.
good luck.
