Sometimes when my boyfriend and I are having a conversation, he will take a deep breath before answering a question. I know it's not because his answer is going to be really long and needs the air. What does this behavior imply? Sometimes he does it when I say something that could imply I want to start a fight, other times, its unexpected.

It could mean many things.

1. It could mean he's filling empty space while thinking carefully about his response; some people say "um...", some people say "well..." and some people take a deep breath.

2. It could mean he's keeping himself relaxed and calm. If a person has a hair-trigger temper, or gets easily frustrated, they'll often find coping mechanisms to prevent outbursts. So you say something that triggers an emotional response from him, and he takes a deep breath before talking to stay calm and not blurt out something he shouldn't.

3. It could mean he's fed up with you, and you exasperate him, but he doesn't have the guts to say so (or doesn't want to hurt your feelings) so he sighs to express that exasperation with as little drama as possible.

4. It could mean he's thinking. Often, people who are carefully considering a response will zone out for a moment, and a habit will take over. Might be tapping fingers, taking a deep breath, looking at their hand, or any number of things.

Why don't you wait until he's not sighing -- that is, when you're not in a potentially loaded conversation -- and say, "I've been wondering -- why do you sometimes take a deep breath before responding to me when we talk?" I'm sure he'll tell you, assuming he does it consciously.

He could be doing it to give himself an opportunity (however small) to think about his response. Or it could mean he doesn't care to answer and is afraid you'll be mad about his response.

Don't actually know...why don't you ask him the next time he does it? He may not even realize he's doing it!

I'd say it implies that he just doesn't feel like talking about it to begin with. Don't let that stop you though

It means he is thinking and trying to put what is in his head into words. Guys (me included) have a hard time doing that sometimes.

a guy sighs maybe because he does not want to talk about something or he may be buying himself time so he can think of what to say. =)

There's alot on his mind. Or maybe he wants to come clean about something and is afraid of how you'll act on it.
