Me and my son would like to try this on our own, I know it will be hard, but he likes working on cars and it would be a good project for us

There are Haynes and Chilton repair manuals available for the '98 Eclipse for less than $14 that would explain how to replace the clutch.

A clutch isn't that difficult of a task. I've replaced mine. A Chilton will tell you everything you need to know. I do strongly recommend you follow the directions to the letter, however, and sign up for a forum that you can ask people questions if necessary. Don't skimp on the project, get the flywheel turned, replace the friction disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Replace anything else related that you notice during the course of maintenance.

Practice safety, it's at least a full day of a job unless you know a machine shop that'll turn around the flywheel within a day.

agreed the job itself is duable for two do it yourselfers. I have a 96 galant those engines are pretty easy to work on. The only thing you my need is a transmission jack, Jack stands, impat wrench. As with all the other posts go out and get a chilton's manual (much better than haynes)

In my opinion, you should not attempt this project with your son unless one or both of you has a lot of years of automotive repair training and experience. In addition, you need all sorts of specialized tools including a garage lift and/or special jacks etc.
