He put away his tiney pipe
Last autumn, when the gale was chill:
And now in rusty coat and brown
He tries his strength upon the hill.

With fiddle tucked beneath a wing
He staggers over a stubbled ground:
He climbs upon a sunny stone,
Shakes winter off, and looks around.

He poishes his dingy coat
And scrapes a valiant tune and high
To tell his tiny universe
That April's due to saunter by.

I am probably going to make a complete idiot out of myself on this one.
My first thought was of a bird, with the line about the wing, but birds will sing even in the winter (I think)
What the heck, I am out on a limb here anyway, might as well break it................
So I guess a ground-hog.
And thank you for the poem, it is lovely.
I will be watching this question to find out the answer.

A robin. The rusty and brown coat would be the orange/red belly and brown feathers of a robin.

not sure I think maybe a butterfly. It must be something small because of the tiny universe. I think it must fly because you mention a wing.

I hope you let us in on what it is. I am quite curious.
