Hey!
Oh! They are the people who live on the island before flight oceanic crashed there. They are corrupted from living there so long and have a sence that the island is "theirs". They stole the "french ladie" 's babie and almost stole Clairs.
They aren't as powerful as the people from the oceanic flight, but they use brute force and intimidation as their technique I suppose. They also have more technology from the island also. But in general they are the people who used to live there and are dark corrupted people. They are in a war with the oceanic flight survivors sort of. I can't wait until the third season.

P.S they still don't know how they got there, one claimed he came by baloon. They could be members of the hanso foundation also.
The hanso foundation is the company that started the island for secret testing purposes. From the video tapes the oceanic survivors found, they say they do emotional testing. Charlie and Ego found a hatch where they can view the other hatch where the other oceanic people live. They also found instructions to right down what the people do. This shows that the Island could be a part of an old experiment, but still holds some unlocked power... or the experiment is still going on.

Pygmies that had an unnatural growth spurt. Seriously, at this point the show has hinted they are scientists from a project by the Hanso foundation but have not given a real concrete answer.

my philosophy is that they are guardians of the hereafter and only take those who are willing to let go of their physical life and enter the great beyond with arms wide open.
