it depends. how mch powder is in the cannon? also, keep in mind a cannonball has more inertia than a bullet due to it's greater mass.

Black powder ignites (burns) much more slowly than modern smokeless powders or high explosives detonate (explode). You might want to search on terms such as detonation rate, for explosives.
