If you just plunk your butts down in front of the tube and watch some brainless show, then yes it can be detrimental. However, if you watch a show that the entire family can get something out of & discuss later, or if you rent/watch a movie the entire family can enjoy and interact about, then it can be a relationship building experience. What you get out of it all depends on what you put into it.

Watching TV may be a great way to relax but it is not a good way to build a relationship and in fact if it's all you do together could probably become quite harmful. The main problem is that you're not interacting at all, all your attention is focused on the TV instead of each other. If you're looking for good family or relationship activities, try something a little more old fashioned. Board games, card games, reading aloud, singing and playing music, outdoor things like taking a walk, swimming, playing sports, roller or ice skating, going to the park. Or try a hobby like scrapbooking or model building. All these activities keep the body busy, but leave you open to talking and interacting.

With a lot of thought, one might perhaps use TV and subsequent discussions to build relationships. But I don't know any families that would go to the trouble to make TV a positive force every time they turn it on.
Basically, when the TV is on, conversation either stops or is distracted. You can't have relationships without conversation. If you're looking for ways to build relationships within a family, it's much better to focus on activities that enhance opportunities for conversation, such as shared meals, shared sports, shared projects, etc.

It can be both good and bad. Good if the whole family is watching a movie almost like going to the theater. But it also can be bad because there is no communication going on between anyone.

I would say bad because nobody is talking to each other. Movie night with the family is great but no every night. Game night would be much better for the family relationship.
