Why can't China persuade North Korea not to test missiles?

Most of North Korea's aid comes from China.

China is their largest trading partner and their HUGE next door neighbor, but North Korea is run by a guy who is certifiably insane, a true wacko. I don't think anything will persuade him other than "blunt force trauma" on a really large scale. It is just a question of when and who will administer the smacking around.

I think China could change North Korea's intent on missile testing, if they wanted to, but since the leader of North Korea appears to be even more insane that the leader of the US, maybe it isn't possible.

However, maybe you're asking the wrong questions.

In the first place, why would China want to keep NK from developing missile defense systems.

Secondly, NK is a sovereign country and it is has much their right to develop and test weapons systems as any other country.

Perhaps the US should actually stop bitching about other countries having WMDs and start leading by example by getting rid of it's own.

China is not worried about North Korea's missiles. They assume that NK is an ally and a great buffer between themselves and South Korea. And if NK keeps nearby Japan, Taiwan (and their US ally) off balance, all the better.

So China is not going to tweak Kim Jong IL... nothing to be gained.

China acts generally in their own calculating self-interest. So much for the view of Communism as the haven from oppression for all people of the world.
