Predicting a quarterback's NFL talents seems so difficult. The talent level of players at other key offensive positions like RB and WR seems much easier to gauge. There's a long list of pathetic first round QBs and so many great quarterbacks seem to be drafted in the later rounds.

No I don't think it is a bad idea to draft a QB in the first round. Yes I understand Tom Brady was a 6th rd pick, Joe Montana was a 3rd rdr, but many of the dominant QBs over the past decade (Peyton Manning, McNabb, Favre et al) were either 1st or 2nd rd picks, and up and coming QBs like Roethlisberger, Palmer, and Eli Manning were all high 1st rd picks. I still think if you have a potential stud in the 1st rd you roll the dice.

PS Hey Dizyman, where were the Bengals BEFORE they drafted Palmer? They were the laughing stock of the NFL. Carson Palmer had emerged as one of the best, exciting young QBs in the NFL over the last two years and in 2005 led the Bengals to their first playoff appearance since George HW Bush was President (1990). Yes his knee injury was a setback but he has been working hard all off season and last I read he was ahead of schedule. I think you should be more appreciative of Carson Palmer.

The answer to this question depends on how your team did. If your offense did very bad but your defense did good. They yes it's a very good idea to draft a quarterback in the first round. But if your defense did bad it would be better to trade away your draf pick for 1-2 defensive players then take a quarterback in the late first/early second round.

it depends on the team he's gong to and what they already have. Take Alex Smith for instance, there is no quarterback in the existence of the NFL that would've been able to succeed in that situation. Ben Roethlesberger's another example; the Steelers were already a strong team when they drafted him, so it was easier for him to do well.
I think a good WR or RB is probably the safest bet for a 1st round pick. It also depends a lot on your teams needs.

Drafting a QB in the first round can either make or break the organization and cost a GM his job. The year that Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning were in the draft is a great example. The Chargers needed a QB and they had a chance to pick either one and went with Leaf. We all know what happened after that.

There's a long list of pathetic players at all positions. Ki-jana Carter anybody? Teams draft QBs in the first round often because they can't change the face of the franchise. The draft is a crap shoot top to bottom. In many cases, it's worth the risk. In some, it's not.

Kolb is the way ahead for the francihse as of on the instant. he's merely not likely to be an awesome QB like McNabb because this guy won't be able to scramble to boot out of the pocket, he wouldn't have a unmarried reliable receiver, and Westbrook is alays damage. And he turned right into a special attain. If the Eagles may of gotten Jarrett in the second one, Kolb may nevertheless be there in the third round. I disagree with Joe. If Losman turns into th next vast well known human being, he may merely hit arrbetration and go back to Buffalo because they have an awesome WR in Lee Evans and an awesome RB in the making in Marshawn Lynch.

QBs are cornerstones. No position lasts longer in the NFL than a quarterback besides a WR...and what good is a WR without an arm to throw to it?

I agree with you!!! and to answer your question, I think it's 50/50. Sometimes you find a Diamond and sometimes you find everyday stones you'd like to toss skip in a river....lol

I also would like like to add that paying any first rounder so much guaranteed money more than likely takes away from their drive to perform at the highest level.

Can you imagine being poor and having nothing, then you go to high school and become a star, then you go to college and become a bigger star but your still poor. Then you get drafted in the first round of the NFL draft and your guaranteed millions of dollars. Some of these players loose than drive to compete with tons of cash in their pockets.

To back up your point, only three QB's drafted in the first round since 1980 have taken their team to the Superbowl. Good question.

depends if a team needs a quarterback, and it is hard to evaluate that early, Look at Tom Brady, he was in the lower rungs of the draft but look what he has done already, a couple of superbowl appearances and wins
