Greg Iles writes some great thrillers. Although I liked Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons, Brown doesn't do too much with character development. Iles writes great stories and characters that are interesting and certainly not perfect. Try reading The Quiet Game by Iles along with its sequel Turning Angel. Other great books by him are Mortal Fear and Dead Sleep.
Other great authors are Lee Child (Jack Reacher novels), John Sandford (Lucas Davenport/Prey novels) and Jonathan Kellerman (Alexander Delaware novels).

I agree with Greg Iles-great stuff. Creepy and enthralling.
I also dig the early Patricia Cornwell-anything before 1998, with Kay Scarpetta as the lead. Cornwell was one of the best; read them in order to get the full effect.
Also, Michael Connelly is a good read. He has a new one coming out and a huge list of novels "starring" Harry Bosch, and a few that are just random characters.

One that I read. The Firm by John Grisham. That was fun and freakin awesome. Also try another Dan Brown book. Digital Fortress was almost and seriously near as good.

Minette Walters, P.D. James
They're both great at creating interesting characters and unexpected outcomes.
