Yeah they are persistant

Ok here's the best info I can find for you;
http://www.birdforum.net/printthread.php?t=22852

Most sites don't offer up suggestions. It seems that lotions/sprays/creams don't work.

Quoted;
"I have tried various sprays, lotions and powders to ward off these various insects. I have found the best solution for me is to dust a little sulphur powder around my ankles, waist and neck. This seems to keep most of the annoying little critters at bay! Sulphur is not the most pleasant smelling substance though, so I do not always apply it when I go out birding. If I walk through a weedy patch I usually pay the price with multiple chigger bites which tend to be very itchy and sometimes fester causing additional discomfort."

"I've tried lots of sprays/repellents, generally DEET based at various percentages. The one I've found most effective is sold at Walmart and is called REPEL Insect Block (Sportsmen Formula) which has a relatively low 29% DEET."

"You should try the Scottish Highlands in summer, Larry. There's a different beastie for every sort of occasion - clegs, ticks and of course midges. I've never managed to entirely repel any of these fellows (they seem to like me)."

Hontestly, I'd try wearing loose clothing. Hopefully they cannot bite through it. They sound like a real problem.
The link below talks about their habitat and tendancies.

Here's some other suggestions;

Sweat Bees

Sweat bees are attracted to sweet smells, so don't use perfume or other highly scented products if you know you'll be outside. I've never had a problem with sweat bees biting, they're just more aggravating than anything.

I've had a very good experience using Vitamin B1. B1 is water soluable, and when you take huge double or triple doses (see a nutritionist abut the right dose) the excess is sloughed off through the skin. Not only do Sweat bees hate the smell, but also mosquitos and other flying pests.

drawback: you smell lightly like a pharmacy.....but if you are allergic, like me, it's a small price to pay.

There is not much you can do cause I would not use the deet or chemical sprays out just for the sake of preventing cancer to you. Don't wear perfumes because that attracks some bees but a natural citronella helps

There are many insect repellant products made to be applied on human body. You can get them at places such as Rite Aids, Longs, Wallgreen, etc. They come in spray form for easy application. I use them every time I go out to the woods. I could actually saw flying insects made a U-turn as they approach my uncovered face, neck, arms, and legs. The nice things about these repellants are they do not give a foul smell and they are not greasy. You apply them and forget about them. I spray myself from head to toe and even on thin clothing. Good luck.

Try a 2 liter bottle with 1 inch of coke or spite ( not diet) in the bottom leave the top off and set it out. the bees will go into the bottle and get trapped. They can't resist the soda and happily enter the bottle, nobody will have swatted at them so they won't be irritated to begin with. preoccupied with the goodies they won't even bug you.

This is the same technique I have taught over 138,000 men and women in 157 countries to successfully treat their excessive sweating condition over the past 7 years!
